CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“Ireckon I’d be happy living in Italy,” Sal said. He and Toby were moonbathing on top of the wizarding shed. “Imagine the scene … Sparkling seas, blue skies, biscotti biscuit crumbs absolutely everywhere …”

“Pizza crusts,” Toby added. “Yum.”

“Cheese,” said Sal. “So much cheese!”

“Meatballs.” Toby sighed.

“Shall we emigrate?” Sal asked.

“I doubt Clarissa would. She likes it here. She’s not fond of the sun. Plus Ed’s here, isn’t he? At the moment she wouldn’t leave him behind.”

They both poked their tongues out. “Bleugh.”

“I thought you liked the Ed hooman?” asked Moriarty. She was sitting primly on the highest point of the shed, probably listening out for mousing opportunities.

“We do,” said Toby.

“He’s a sweetheart,” said Sal.

“A bit of a fool at times,” said Toby.

“But we don’t hold that against him,” Sal added.

“It’s just all that lovey-dovey stuff.” Toby pulled a face again.

“Ick,” said Sal.

“Perhaps you could all move out there together,” suggested Moriarty. “Ed as well.”

“Do they have detectives in Italy?” asked Sal.

“I think the Pink Panther came from there.” Toby scratched his head. “Oh, wait. Maybe he was French.”

“It’s all the same to me,” said Sal. “Oo-row-pee-on.”

“Speaking of detectives,” said Moriarty, “where are you up to with this bakery case?”

“I think we found out quite a lot today,” Toby said, thinking back over the day’s events. Clarissa was inside writing up her notes. “We discovered that Cathy doesn’t like Dee Dee and Bryn doesn’t like Cathy and the staff at Groggs don’t know anything about anything and they really don’t care either and nobody but nobody liked Mayor Casterford.”

“A fair summation,” said Sal, scratching his belly. Toby was beginning to wonder whether Sal had fleas.

“But how does that help you?” Moriarty asked.

“I’m not sure,” Toby admitted. “I still don’t know whether Dee Dee is guilty or innocent, and I don’t know whether anyone is trying to set Dee Dee up to take a fall—”

“If they were trying to set her up, my money would be on Cathy,” said Sal.

“Would it?” Toby scrunched up his face, not so sure.

“Yeah. She didn’t seem like a happy lady. Unhappy people do unhappy things …”

“I’m not sure that follows,” said Moriarty, inspecting her claws. “I’m fairly sure happy people can do unhappy things too.”

“Unhappy as in murderous?” Toby asked. “Let’s be clear about what we’re suggesting here.”

“Ladies are more likely to be poisoners than men,” Sal reminded Toby. He’d been watching lots of afternoon detective shows too, so he knew what he was talking about.

“I don’t know.” Toby shook his head. “I know she wasn’t the nicest of people”—mainly because she didn’t like dogs—“but I didn’t get a sense that she would murder anyone.”

“I think Toby has a soft spot for the ladies,” said Sal.

“Not the pointy ones,” Toby said.

“Why don’t you go and take a look at this Cathy’s premises?” Moriarty suggested.

“What, now?” Toby had been considering a pre-nighttime nap. Setting out on an adventure wasn’t high on his list of priorities right now.

“No time like the present,” said Moriarty.

Sal didn’t appear too keen either.
